The next-generation Internet Protocol (IP) can generate a virtually unlimited number of
IP addresses in order to cope with explosive growth in Internet use.
After explosive growth and the sheer number of devices accessing the web, more devices accessing the Internet means more addresses need to be made available.
In the main, IP addresses are provided according to the IPv4 standard, which can only generate a limited number – 232 or about 4.3 billion. These will soon run out, so IPv6 has been introduced to provide a virtually unlimited number – 3.4 x 1038 or about 2128 – addresses.
